The Punjab government has announced a public holiday across the state on May 26 on account of local body elections.
The decision has been taken to facilitate smooth voting and enable voters to cast their ballots in the elections for 104 municipal bodies, including eight municipal corporations.
The corporations going to polls are Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala, and Pathankot, according to an official statement.
Polling will also be held for 75 municipal councils and 21 Nagar panchayats. The counting of votes will take place on May 29.
The holiday will also apply to all Punjab government offices, corporations, boards, and educational institutions situated in Chandigarh.
Polling will be conducted through ballot papers.
The State Election Commission (SEC) said a total of 7,555 candidates have been cleared to contest the upcoming municipal general elections. The state is gearing up for a high-stakes, multi-cornered contest.
The incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded the highest number of candidates at 1,801, followed by the Congress with 1,550, Independents with 1,528, the BJP with 1,316, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) with 1,251.
The BSP has fielded 96 candidates, while 13 others make up the rest of the official ballot.
