In an effort to break the decades-old deadlock over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini will meet again to discuss the issue.
The meeting has been scheduled following a Supreme Court order directing both states to hold talks on January 27. Senior officials from Punjab and Haryana will also attend the meeting.
The SYL Canal dispute has remained a major point of tension between the two states since the 1980s. It highlights the larger challenge of sharing river waters between states. Despite several rounds of talks, mediation by the Centre, and court directions, the issue has yet to be resolved.
The first round of discussions under Supreme Court directions was held on August 18, 2020, when Capt Amarinder Singh was the Chief Minister of Punjab and Manohar Lal Khattar led Haryana. Talks resumed on October 14, 2022, in Chandigarh after the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in Punjab. Another meeting was held on January 4, 2023, in Delhi under the leadership of former Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
