North India is likely to see unusual and heavy rainfall from Saturday to Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted very heavy rain in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana. The intense rain is expected because three strong weather systems are coming together, bringing large amounts of moisture to the region.
The heavy rain will start on Saturday with a new western disturbance entering northwest India. This system will draw moist air from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. At the same time, a low-pressure area over the northeast Arabian Sea and a depression near the Bay of Bengal will strengthen, adding even more moisture and making the rain heavier.
Authorities have issued red alerts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, over 21 cm in a single day. The weather is likely to bring thunderstorms, lightning, and hail in some areas.
Weather experts are terming this event “very unique.” The combined weather systems are expected to push the cyclonic circulation from the western disturbance into Punjab and Rajasthan by October 5. This will increase rainfall and could cause flash floods and landslides in hilly areas.
Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected from Sunday to Wednesday. The heaviest rain is expected on Monday, particularly in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and nearby regions.
Punjab has already received 41 per cent more rain than normal this monsoon. The upcoming weather may further increase the risk of flooding. In Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, landslides are more likely in the hills. Rescue teams are on standby. Officials are urging people to store essential supplies, avoid unnecessary travel, and watch weather alerts, specially in high-risk areas.
As these systems combine and delay the end of the monsoon, local authorities are requesting everyone to stay alert and be ready for sudden and possibly dangerous weather in the coming days.
