Political parties in Punjab on Monday strongly criticised the BJP-led Central government over the fresh increase in fuel prices. They said it is a heavy burden on common people who are already struggling with rising prices of daily essentials.
Petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs 2.61–2.71 per litre on Monday. This is the fourth hike in less than two weeks as state-run fuel retailers continue to pass on rising global oil prices to consumers.
With this latest revision, total fuel price increases have now reached nearly Rs 7.5 per litre since revisions resumed on May 15 after a long pause. This has raised concerns about inflation and higher transport costs across the economy. As per industry sources, petrol prices went up by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre.
Commenting on the hike, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the Central government has given another “shock” to common people. He said the BJP government has no concern for struggling households. He added that while many countries are offering relief from fuel shocks, people in India are being left to handle rising prices on their own. He questioned whether this is the “Amrit Kaal” promised to citizens.
Cheema also said the Centre has failed in economic management. He pointed out that the rupee is moving close to 100 against the dollar, petrol prices have crossed Rs 100 per litre, and gold duty has been increased to 15 per cent. He also said India’s decision to import US goods may hurt farmers and make agriculture less competitive.
He said rising prices, a weak currency, policy uncertainty, and pressure on farmers are pushing the economy into distress. He added that the economy is in poor shape.
Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa also criticised the fuel price hike. He said fuel prices have been increased again, the rupee is weakening against the dollar, and the cost of living is becoming difficult for ordinary people. He said after petrol crossed Rs 100 per litre, the rupee may soon touch Rs 100 per dollar.
He also criticised the government for talking about strong diplomacy and economic success, saying the ground reality is different. “The BJP had assured that PM Modi's global image and friendships would strengthen India's economy, which has not happened,” Bajwa said in a post on X. He added that every economic shock is now being passed directly to the common citizen.
Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal also criticised the hike. He said this is the fourth increase in petrol and diesel prices in just 10 days. "This is a crippling blow to the common man already battling skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. It will push the agriculture sector into recession, devastate the middle class, and inflict untold misery on the poor," the SAD chief said in a post on X.
He demanded that the Centre immediately reduce GST and other taxes on fuel and essential items to give relief from inflation.
