The Punjab government is likely to hold the Monsoon Session of the Vidhan Sabha in the first week of August. The session is expected to take up key legislative and policy matters.
One of the main issues likely to come up is the proposed amendments to the Sri Jaagat Jot Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act.
The move marks a shift from the government's earlier plan to call a one-day special Assembly session to discuss the issue. The controversy had triggered a standoff between AAP leaders and the Akal Takht Jathedar.
According to sources, the dates for the session are likely to be announced this week. The Assembly is expected to meet in early August and the proceedings may continue for up to a week.
Preparations for the session are already underway. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is holding discussions with political advisors, senior officials and Cabinet colleagues to finalise the agenda.
On June 29, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj had asked all Sikh MLAs to appear before the Akal Takht. He had also directed the government to amend the anti-sacrilege law within one month.
The Punjab government is now expected to seek more time from the Akal Takht Secretariat to complete the amendment process beyond the July 28 deadline. As the current Assembly is in its final year, this is likely to be its last Monsoon Session.
