An accused in a murder case was shot dead in an exchange of fire with the police on late Sunday while attempting to escape from custody during a weapon recovery operation.
According to officials, the incident occurred when the accused was being taken to a specific location for the retrieval of the firearm used in the crime.
A few days earlier, the Amritsar Rural Police had apprehended two suspects, Bishemberjit Singh and Sharanjit Singh, from a hotel in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, in connection with a murder case registered on March 9.
Following their arrest, the police launched an investigation to trace crucial evidence linked to the crime. During interrogation, Bishemberjit Singh disclosed that he had hidden the murder weapon in Sherobaga village.

Acting on this information, the police escorted the accused to the designated location to recover the concealed firearm. Upon reaching the spot, Bishemberjit Singh managed to retrieve a pistol that had been hidden there. In a sudden attempt to flee, he opened fire at the police team, injuring one of the personnel in the process.
Faced with an immediate threat, the police officers responded with retaliatory fire, during which the accused sustained bullet injuries.
Following the encounter, the injured accused was swiftly transported to the Civil Hospital for medical attention. However, doctors at the hospital declared him "brought dead."
The police have since reinforced security measures and launched further inquiries into the incident. Meanwhile, the injured police personnel received medical treatment and is reported to be out of danger.
