The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the by-poll to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab. The vacancy arose after Sanjeev Arora resigned on July 1, 2025. The term for this seat will continue until April 9, 2028.
The notification, issued on Monday, states that the by-poll will be conducted according to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the rules framed under it.
The nomination process will begin on October 6 and the last date to file nominations is October 13. However, nominations will not be accepted on gazetted public holidays covered under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
October 14, 2025 (Tuesday) is scheduled for the scrutiny of nominations. Candidates can withdraw their names until October 16, 2025 (Thursday). If polling is required, it will take place on October 24, 2025 (Friday). The election process must be completed by October 28, 2025 (Tuesday).
Polling, if needed, will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
In coordination with the Punjab government, the ECI has appointed Ram Lok Khatana, Secretary of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Secretariat, as the Returning Officer. Jaswinder Singh, Deputy Secretary, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Secretariat, will assist as the Assistant Returning Officer to manage the election process.
