Punjab Police is preparing to issue Interpol silver notices against a list of 61 'most active' gangsters operating from abroad. The move is aimed at freezing their fixed and movable assets worldwide.
According to officials, the notices—a colour-coded alert designed to trace, identify, monitor and recover criminal assets—will target gangsters involved in targeted killings, extortion, inter-gang murders, and attacks on politicians as well as high-ranking officials.
DGP Gaurav Yadav stated last week that extradition proceedings against 38 of these gangsters were already underway, and being handled by the Bureau of Investigation (BOI) of Punjab Police.
ADGP LK Yadav, who heads the BOI, confirmed that Interpol had begun serving silver notices. Unlike red notices (which seek arrest and extradition), silver notices focus on locating wanted individuals in other countries, tagging their properties, vehicles, bank accounts, businesses and other assets.
This enables Interpol member countries to freeze or seize assets linked to organised crime across borders.
Officials noted that the first silver notice was issued in January 2025 at Italy’s request to freeze assets belonging to a senior mafia figure. The pilot phase reached 50 notices and continued until November 2025, before full global implementation.
ADGP LK Yadav said, “The code is similar to India’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act or Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Such accounts can be frozen abroad through a silver notice. It’s an important tool to block and cripple the finances of the gangs and their members.”
Meanwhile, the Punjab Police has intensified Operation Prahar 2.0 to dismantle gang networks, organised crime syndicates, drug cartels and extortion rackets. In the past week alone, 3,256 dreaded criminals have been arrested.
Since the launch of Prahar 2.0, police have conducted raids at nearly 17,000 locations and arrested over 9,000 criminals.
DGP Yadav declared, “2026 will be the year against gangsters in Punjab. We will cleanse the state of these dreaded criminals and neutralise their entire network.”
