Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday announced that the state government will provide free travel in Punjab Roadways buses for students appearing in the NEET UG re-examination scheduled for June 21.
Mann said many students from economically weaker families appear for the NEET exam and often struggle to afford travel expenses to reach their examination centres. He said after Arvind Kejriwal interacted with students and heard their concerns, the Punjab government decided to waive bus fares for NEET candidates on June 20, 21 and 22. Students will only need to show their admit cards while travelling in Punjab Roadways buses.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate), which was conducted on May 3, was later cancelled after allegations of irregularities in the examination process.
After the cancellation, several NEET aspirants raised concerns about financial stress and mental pressure caused by the rescheduling of the exam. Responding to these concerns, Kejriwal said on Tuesday that he would request Mann to make bus travel free for students appearing in the re-examination in Punjab.
In a video message posted on X, Kejriwal said many students contacted him after he sought feedback on the NEET issue. He said his earlier video received more than 50 lakh views and thousands of students shared their experiences of anxiety, depression and frustration after the exam cancellation and the announcement of the new exam date of June 21.
Referring to students’ complaints about travel costs, Kejriwal said he planned to discuss the matter with Mann during his visit to Punjab. He added that some students had written to him saying they could not afford even bus fares, and the government should help ensure that financial constraints do not prevent candidates from appearing in the examination.
