Punjabi singer Harbir Singh Sohal has been apprehended after police seized 5 kg of heroin and Rs 1.50 lakh in cash from his Mahindra Thar car on Monday.
According to the police, the singer was allegedly working as a “courier” in a drug smuggling network operated from Australia. The investigation began after a man named Akshay Kumar from Ludhiana was apprehended with drugs on March 7.
After tracing backward links in the case, two more accused, Vishal and Sanjeev, both from Shimlapuri, were arrested. During questioning, Sohal’s name came up. Police said he was acting as a courier in the drug supply chain. Sohal, originally from Amritsar, was living in Mohali at the time of his arrest.
Investigators said the heroin consignment was linked to Gurjant Singh, also known as Janta, who is currently believed to be in Australia.
Police said Janta was running the network from abroad, handling funding and operations, while his associates in Punjab managed supply and distribution. Officials are now probing foreign links, financial transactions and organised crime connections.
Agencies also said gangster Jaipal Bhullar’s name has surfaced in the case, and they are checking whether drug money was used to fund criminal activities.
