Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spent Tuesday afternoon in Gudalur, participating in the golden jubilee celebrations of St Thomas English High School. Arriving around 3 PM, the Leader of the Opposition was met with an enthusiastic reception at the campus, which is marking 50 years since its founding in 1976.
Gandhi didn't just stick to the formal ceremonies; he celebrated the festivities by participating in a traditional dance alongside the students and staff.
Coinciding with the harvest season, the school also hosted a Pongal celebration. Gandhi also took part in the traditional ritual of preparing the festival's namesake dish, 'Chakkarai Pongal.'
He was seen stirring the pot of rice, green gram, and jaggery as the entire school community gathered to mark the occasion. His visit offered a mix of cultural immersion and local engagement, highlighting the milestone anniversary of one of the area's long-standing educational institutions.
Moreover, he alleged that the nation's democratic structure and the voice of the people are under attack by those running the central government.
While interacting with students, he said institutions such as the Election Commission were under attack. Without naming anybody in particular.
"They are threatening people who don't agree with their ideology." In such a scenario, "we need young people like you who are confident and not scared of asking questions," he added.
India is a democratic country and "our democratic system is under attack. Democracy is all about all the people having a voice... I have been saying that our democratic structure is under attack, and so the voice of our people is under attack by those running the government."
