Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday asserted that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, should become the next Prime Minister. Addressing a public meeting after laying foundation stones for a series of development projects in the Midjil Mandal, Reddy appealed to the public to extend their gratitude to Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi for granting statehood to Telangana. He urged them to show this appreciation by supporting his efforts to promote Rahul Gandhi as the future leader of the country.
The Chief Minister once again restated his strong conviction that the Congress Party will continue to rule till 2034. The CM said it is a historical compulsion for the country that Rahul Gandhi should become the next Prime Minister in 2029 and appealed to the citizens of Telangana to support this vision starting from Midjil Mandal itself. Reddy spoke lovingly about his relationship with the region as he mentioned that he was elected to the Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency 20 years back. He said proudly that the plant of politics sown by the citizens of the region 20 years ago has now grown into a huge tree that enabled him to address them as the Chief Minister.
Taking into consideration the glorious history of producing outstanding leaders in the region, Reddy urged Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka to embrace Midjil Mandal and make it an exemplary project throughout the country. He recalled that while both Midjil and Gattu Mandals had once been labelled as “Dark Mandals” because of severe water shortages, it was the locals who took a crucial decision in 2006 to pull the backward region out of darkness and thus enabled him to reach the political heights. He said that he would now shoulder the complete burden of developing Palamuru, a region facing droughts and migration problems.
Maintaining that his administration is successfully balancing public welfare with state development, Reddy took a swipe at opposition parties who had previously mocked his lack of administrative experience because he hails from the Nallamala forest region. He countered that his background gave him first-hand experience of the struggles of the poor, allowing him to provide genuine solutions, and questioned the arrogance of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders who doubted his governance capabilities.
Launching a scathing attack on former Chief Minister and BRS leader K Chandrashekar Rao, Reddy claimed that the opposition was desperate to regain power only because their avenues for profiteering, looting, and theft had been cut off. He questioned how BRS leaders amassed thousands of crores over ten years, alleging they plundered one lakh crore rupees while leaving the state with a debt burden of eight lakh crore rupees. Referring to an ongoing phone-tapping controversy, the Chief Minister warned that if such figures returned to office, citizens would lose the freedom to speak safely on their phones, strongly castigating his predecessor for skipping assembly sessions rather than raising public issues.
As part of his defence of his administration's performance from 2023, Reddy cited various social welfare programmes that have been successful, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the criticism levelled at him by the opposition. He wondered how people could deny the fact that his government has been able to supply good quality rice, waived loans for farmers, introduced Rythu Bharosa, bonuses for fine paddy, free travel in buses, and even electricity worth 200 units free of charge. In closing, he questioned the crowd as to what his previous administration had really accomplished while taking up so many debts, given that their promises like double bedroom houses and jobs for each family remained totally unfulfilled.
