Indian Railways has transported more than five lakh apple boxes within ten days after launching a special parcel service in the Union Territory (UT), officials said.
From September 11 to 21, the Railways dispatched 19 apple trains from Budgam, Anantnag, and Baramulla stations, carrying a total of 542,699 apple boxes to markets in New Delhi, Jammu, and other important destinations across the country, they said.
The special parcel service is part of efforts to ease the travel time for agricultural produce during the peak season.
According to Railway officials, most consignments originated from Anantnag station, which accounted for 430,013 boxes loaded across 10 trains. The station also recorded a single-day high on 20 September, when 91,662 boxes were dispatched in a single day.
From Budgam, over 94,000 boxes were loaded and dispatched in eight trains, along with 225 walnut bags and 74 walnut giri boxes.
At Baramulla station, one train carried 18,298 boxes, including 18,098 apple boxes and 200 pear boxes, totalling 36,596 boxes, officials said.
Officials said these figures highlight the growing reliance on the Railway network for transporting the Kashmiri apple crop to markets outside the Valley. Timely dispatches are critical for maintaining supply chains and providing economic support to growers across the Valley.
