The Rajasthan High Court has pulled up the State Election Commission for the long delay in holding municipality elections and has ordered it to take immediate steps to conduct the polls.
In a ruling, Justice Anoop Dhand stated that the Election Commission cannot be allowed to remain a "silent spectator" and must address the delay, which he said was undermining local self-governance and violating the constitutional mandate.
The court observed that the terms of several urban local bodies in the state have already expired, but elections have not been held within the required six-month period, which is a constitutional requirement. The court added that this delay was undermining the functioning of democratic institutions at a local level.
The bench has now directed the State Election Commission to take appropriate measures and ensure that the overdue municipality elections are conducted in a timely manner.
