A fresh but rare spell of snowfall was reported in the upper reaches of the Kashmir Valley, including the Tulail area in Bandipora district, while widespread parts of the Valley received fresh rainfall on Thursday.
Besides snowfall in Drass and Zojila areas, heavy rainfall caused damage to properties in several districts, officials said. The snowfall led to a major dip in temperatures not only in Tulail Valley but also along the Drass and Zojila axis.
In the past few days, temperatures had climbed above 30 degrees Celsius, triggering a sudden and intense change in weather across the Kashmir Valley. With the fresh rainfall spell, maximum temperatures across the Valley come down significantly on Thursday.
Heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms also caused damage to properties in Srinagar, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts. The Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rain and thundershowers across Jammu and Kashmir until Saturday, with higher activity expected over the Kashmir region.
Short, intense showers, gusty winds, lightning, and hailstorms are possible in isolated places in the Valley.
Meanwhile, apart from causing infrastructure and crop damage in north Kashmir, the rainfall also inundated several low-lying areas of Srinagar city, affecting normal life.
