The Ravi-Beas Waters Tribunal, formed to allocate the sharing of waters of the Ravi and Beas rivers between Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is expected to meet Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Amritsar late on Sunday evening.
According to sources, the Tribunal, headed by Justice Vineet Saran (retd), reached Amritsar for a two-day visit to the state on Saturday evening. The three-member tribunal is expected to visit the Harikeheadworks later today.
The Punjab government is also planning to show them the Ballewal headworks (a vital hydraulic structure) of the Luther Canal in Ferozepur.
According to officials, the leather industry of Kasur in Pakistan flows into the Sutlej; as a result, the Ferozepur region is facing the brunt of polluted water.
The government will show the tribunal the border areas which are affected by the polluted water from Kasur.
The water tribunal is also likely to assess the river water availability situation and monitor the water inflow and outflow across the states. The government will then place before the tribunal details of the shortage of canal water in the border belt of the state.
The Punjab government is expected to insist before the tribunal that the water distribution should be done afresh.
It is pertinent to mention that friction over water distribution between Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan has been going on for decades and remains one of the most important issues to be resolved in north India.
