According to an official statement given on Monday, over 1.6 million people in Bihar have been affected by floods, with several rivers overflowing their banks following torrential rainfall in the last 24 hours. A total of 32 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to conduct rescue operations.

An official said that constant rain in districts — Bhojpur, Patna, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Lakhisarai, Saran, Munger, Khagaria, and Begusarai — has caused rivers and streams to swell. Furthermore, heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Nepal has led to several rivers flowing above the danger level in multiple locations.

“Rains in the past few days have raised the water level of the Ganga, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, Punpun and Ghaghara rivers in the state. These are flowing above the danger mark at certain places in Bhojpur, Patna, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Lakhisarai, Saran, Munger, Khagaria and Begusarai,” the Disaster Management Department said in a statement.

The Principal Secretary of the Water Resources Department (WRD), Santosh Kumar Mall, told the Press Trust of India that due to the continuous rise in water levels and heavy rainfall in the Nepalese catchment areas of the Gandak and Kosi rivers, all relevant WRD units have been instructed to remain on high alert.

He added that concerned districts have also been directed to prepare for the establishment of more relief camps and community kitchens should the situation worsen.
