The West Bengal government has appointed four new members to the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBCSSC), including three senior monks of the Ramakrishna Mission and a professor from IIM Calcutta, in a move aimed at restoring transparency and expediting the commission’s functioning. A notification issued by the state government on Tuesday said the appointments were made through the special powers vested in the Governor under Section 3(4) of the West Bengal School Service Commission Act, 1997. The four appointees will assume office immediately and continue in their positions until further orders.
The new members include Swami Atmapriyananda, Pro-Chancellor and Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI); Swami Shastrajnananda, Secretary of the Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Ashram; and Swami Tattvasarananda, a trustee of Belur Math, member of the Ramakrishna Mission’s Governing Body and Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture at Golpark.
The fourth appointee is Ramya Tarakada Venkateswaran, a professor in the Strategic Management group at IIM Calcutta. The appointments come as the School Service Commission (SSC) faces the task of clearing several long-pending recruitment processes. On Tuesday, SSC Chairman Dushyant Nariala provided an update on the progress of teacher recruitment.
Recommendation letters for the recruitment of teachers for Classes XI and XII were scheduled to be handed over on August 14. However, Nariala expressed some uncertainty over whether the distribution would take place on the scheduled date, while maintaining that the commission was making every effort to complete the process at the earliest.
Nariala said the recruitment process would be completed strictly in accordance with the commission’s prescribed guidelines. Under the 2025 recruitment drive, document verification has already been completed for around 15,000 of the approximately 39,000 candidates, with work on the remaining candidates progressing.
The chairman also announced that the recruitment process for 1,177 pending Upper Primary posts from 2016 had been completed. In addition, recruitment letters for 308 special education teacher posts have already been issued.
The latest appointments and recruitment updates come at a crucial juncture for the commission, with the new members expected to contribute to the process of restoring institutional functioning while the authorities work to clear the backlog in teacher recruitment.
