The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has approved a project worth Rs 1.04 crore for the development of the origin site of the Gomti River in Kalinagar tehsil of Pilibhit district.

According to an official statement issued on Monday, Rs 78 lakh has already been released in the first phase of the project. Once completed, the site is expected to emerge as a major hub for religious, cultural and eco-tourism, attracting pilgrims, history enthusiasts and nature lovers from across the country.

The state government has undertaken an ambitious initiative to transform the birthplace of the Gomti River into a world-class spiritual and tourism destination, the statement said.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said that rivers have historically been the cradle of human civilisation, nurturing communities and shaping cultural traditions over centuries. He noted that the Gomti River, regarded as one of Uttar Pradesh's most important rivers and a symbol of its rich cultural and spiritual legacy, originates from Gomat Tal, formerly known as Phulhar Lake, near Madhotanda village in Pilibhit district.

"The Gomti holds a special place in the Sanatan tradition. It irrigates vast agricultural regions of the state and supports the livelihoods of millions of people. Beyond its economic significance, the river is deeply intertwined with the religious and cultural identity of Uttar Pradesh," Singh said.

He added that the Tourism Department is working to develop the river's origin site into a prominent centre for spiritual, cultural and tourism activities, while preserving its natural and historical importance.

As part of the project, several modern facilities will be created to improve the experience of visitors and pilgrims. The plan includes the construction of a multipurpose hall, a modern toilet complex and a visitor shelter. In addition, interlocking pathways, landscaped gardens, beautification works, solar-powered infrastructure and various other public amenities will be developed at the site.

The Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC) has been entrusted with executing the project and ensuring its timely completion.
The Gomti River originates from the ancient Phulhar Lake, also known as Gomat Tal, in the Madhotanda region of Pilibhit. Flowing for nearly 960 kilometres, the river passes through several districts, including Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi, Sitapur, Lucknow, Barabanki, Sultanpur and Jaunpur, before finally joining the Ganga in Ghazipur district.

The river also occupies a prominent place in Hindu mythology and religious traditions. According to popular belief, Lord Ram took a holy dip in the Gomti after returning victorious from Lanka. The sacred town of Naimisharanya, considered the penance site of 33 crore deities in Hindu tradition, is also situated on its banks. As a result, the Gomti is widely revered as a symbol of faith and a custodian of Uttar Pradesh's spiritual and cultural heritage.

"The origin of Maa Gomti is far more than a geographical landmark; it is a significant centre of Sanatan faith and traditional cultural life. Through its comprehensive development, we aim to provide improved facilities for pilgrims and tourists while preserving its sanctity. Our objective is to ensure that every important heritage and spiritual site in Uttar Pradesh earns the recognition it deserves on the global tourism map," Singh said.
