The Congress party’s high command is likely to discuss its preliminary negotiations with its alliance partner, the National Conference, over the Rajya Sabha elections and the strategy for the polls with the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
Similar arrangements will be discussed by the BJP high command, which is likely to meet party supremo JP Nadda and national general secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh today to discuss candidates for the polls.
Sources have revealed that the Congress high command is holding off discussions on the Rajya Sabha polls until Rahul Gandhi returns, as he is currently touring four South American nations.
“Rahul is expected to arrive within the next few days. The high command will be briefing him about the preliminary negotiations held with the alliance partner National Conference, regarding the seat-sharing arrangement,” sources familiar with the matter said.
Sources also said the NC had not denied offering one seat to the Congress and had not indicated any disinterest in the arrangement. The Congress could field either working president Raman Bhalla or senior leader and MLA from Dooru, Ghulam Ahmad Mir.
On the BJP side, its J&K leadership is also expected to meet party president JP Nadda and general secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh to discuss the list of probable candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls.
BJP UT president Sat Sharma and general secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul are currently in the national capital to meet the party leadership.
It is reliably learnt that BJP spokesperson and prominent lawyer Sunil Sethi, former president Ravinder Raina, and former deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh are among the frontrunners for the party ticket for the third notification.
