The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) carried out extensive voter outreach campaigns across West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections, urging people to vote “without fear” and contributing to the BJP’s strong performance, sources said.

According to those familiar with the efforts, RSS volunteers organised nearly two lakh small group meetings across the state, reaching voters at the grassroots level and raising awareness about poll issues. The outreach, they said, focused on encouraging participation and assuring voters of their safety.

Swayamsevaks also gathered feedback on local sentiment and political developments, which was shared with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to help refine its electoral strategy.

“They really worked so hard,” a senior BJP leader said, acknowledging the role played by RSS volunteers in the party’s performance in the state.

Trends during counting indicated the BJP was poised to dislodge the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, with the party leading in a majority of the 294 Assembly constituencies.

RSS sources described the moment as “emotional”, suggesting the outcome could mark a turning point for the state. “We worked round the clock on the ground and reached out to people with our message. The BJP also worked hard to achieve this success,” a source said.

The groundwork, sources added, began soon after the 2021 Assembly elections, when the BJP emerged as the principal opposition with a significant increase in its tally. Since then, RSS workers have focused on expanding their presence and engaging with local communities on various issues.

They also highlighted the organisation’s role in assisting victims of post-poll violence in 2021, including providing legal aid, compensation support and help in rebuilding damaged homes.

“RSS workers gave strength to Sandeshkhali victims and helped them get legal assistance,” a source said, pointing to continued outreach efforts over the past few years.

The coordinated campaign between the RSS and BJP, sources claimed, played a key role in mobilising voters and strengthening the party’s position in the state.
