Visakhapatnam is set to witness a dazzling event this coming Monday, April 27, as Andhra University celebrates its centennial anniversary in the presence of such luminaries as cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Established in 1926 under the Madras University Act, Andhra University has come a long way from being an institute founded in the colonial era to becoming a leading multi-disciplinary centre catering to the linguistically rich region of the country for a hundred years now.
A legacy is evident from the distinguished list of its alumni, including former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, D Subba Rao; former Vice President of the nation, M Venkaiah Naidu; and eminent businessmen, such as G Mallikarjuna Rao of the GMR Group and BVR Mohan Reddy of CYIENT. Even media personalities are not left out, as exemplified by PTI Editor-in-Chief Vijay Joshi, who graduated from the university with his MSc in Marine Geology. Spread out over the scenic landscape covering 425 acres of land, Andhra University is surrounded on both sides by Kailasa Hill and Bay of Bengal.
The day’s proceedings are set to be quite brisk. Tendulkar is scheduled to touch down at Vizag Airport at approximately 2.30 pm, followed shortly by the Vice President at 4 pm. After a formal guard of honour for the Vice President, the university plans to release a series of commemorative items, including a special coin, stamp, and a heritage coffee table book. The afternoon will also see the university looking toward the future, with digital inaugurations and the signing of new partnerships with the University of Florida, Oxmiq Labs Inc, and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
The celebrations will culminate in a series of addresses from the likes of Governor S Abdul Nazeer, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and film director Trivikram Srinivas. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of excellence awards to ten distinguished alumni, including former Home Secretary K Padmanabhaiah and ex-IIT Delhi director VS Raju. To wrap up the centenary festivities, the university will host a special felicitation for Tendulkar, bringing a century of academic and cultural history to a close with a nod to India’s favourite sporting hero.
