Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s meeting with Bhupinder Singh Dhillon, cousin of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, in Chandigarh has triggered political speculation ahead of the state Assembly Elections, scheduled for next year.
Known as Major Bhup, Dhillon is a senior member of the Badal family and has served as political secretary to Parkash Singh Badal during the SAD-BJP government.
According to sources, Saini visited Dhillon’s residence in Sector 16 on Tuesday and spent nearly two hours there. Later, Bhupinder Singh Dhillon said the meeting was purely personal.
“I recently underwent spine surgery, and the Haryana CM had come to enquire about my well-being,” he stated.
The meeting has assumed greater political significance amid the ongoing developments in Punjab, as major parties gear up for the elections.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has indicated it may contest the polls independently, though both the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the opposition remain sceptical about the party’s prospects.
BJP’s relatively subdued performance in the recently held civic body polls has also raised concerns within party circles.
