People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti and People’s Conference Chief Sajad Gani Lone on Thursday claimed that they were placed under house arrest in an effort to prevent them from visiting the late Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Bhat’s residence.
They said they wanted to offer condolences to the family of the former Hurriyat Conference Chief over his death.
“The decision to place the political leadership under house arrest today simply indicates that it was planned to stop us from visiting Sopore,” they said.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, in a post on X, said, “This is a harsh and undemocratic reality in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Bhat died at his Sopore residence on Wednesday evening after a prolonged illness.
Meanwhile, similar views were shared by Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference Chief Sajad Gani Lone on Thursday. He claimed that he was not allowed to travel to Sopore.
Lone, in a resentful voice, said, “I have been put under house arrest to prevent me from visiting Botingoo, the ancestral village of Professor Gani Sahib. I fail to understand the need for this. Professor Sahib was a pacifist and literally long retired. A final goodbye is something which we all deserved.” Abdul Gani Bhat passed away at the age of 90. He was a famous academician and Kashmiri separatist leader.
He co-founded the Muslim United Front (MUF) in 1986, and later served as chairman of the all-party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a coalition of separatist groups formed in 1993.
