Allegations of gang rape have emerged from the Nanoor area of West Bengal’s Birbhum district, where a woman was allegedly abducted from her home late at night and assaulted. The survivor later attempted suicide by consuming poison and is currently undergoing treatment at Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital. Police said the incident came to light on Saturday after a formal complaint was lodged at Nanoor Police Station. One accused has been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace others allegedly involved.
According to police and family sources, the incident occurred between 12:00 midnight and 1 am on August 5. The woman had reportedly stepped out of her room when a group of youths allegedly scaled the boundary wall of the house, overpowered her, and took her a short distance away. She was then allegedly assaulted, with threats issued to deter her from raising an alarm.
Hearing distress sounds, her husband rushed out, prompting the assailants to flee, sources said.
Family members have alleged that the woman had been facing harassment from some local youths for some time but had not reported it earlier due to fear of social stigma. Following the incident, she consumed poison and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Doctors said her physical condition has since stabilised, though she remains in trauma.
The family has further alleged that they have been receiving threats even after filing the complaint. According to them, relatives of the accused have issued warnings to withdraw the case, allegedly threatening harm to the victim’s children. Police said these allegations are being examined separately.
Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway, with teams working to identify and apprehend all those involved. Additional security measures are also being considered in view of the alleged threats.
