Schools in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district and several parts of neighbouring Kishtwar were closed on Wednesday as a precautionary measure following adverse weather conditions, officials said.

However, students in both districts have been asked to continue their classes through online mode, the officials added.

Following directions from the Doda district administration, Chief Education Officer Doda ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the district on July 29. The decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of students and school staff amid the worsening weather.

In Kishtwar, the district administration also announced the closure of government and private schools in most areas. The move came amid persistent heavy rain, slippery roads and the risk of shooting stones in vulnerable areas.

Schools located within Kishtwar town, from Malipeth to Cherhar, have been exempted from the order and remained open.

Moderate to heavy rain started around 5 am across the Chenab Valley, covering Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. Officials said the situation is being closely watched as the weather department has predicted more moderate to heavy rainfall in the region until August 31.

Despite the rain, the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained open to traffic. The highway is the main all-weather road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.
