Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday opened the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) accounts of over 880 girls of his Guna Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh by making double the initial deposit amount necessary for the process from his own account.

On the occasion, he also declared that he will pay the minimum initial deposit amount necessary for the scheme for the girls born from May 1, 2025 to May 1, 2026 too.

One can open an SSY account with a minimum of only ₹250 as initial deposit.

The minister of communications while participating in a programme announced that he has resolved to open the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana accounts of girls born within a year from 1 May in the constituency of Guna by making the deposit in person.

He attributed this idea to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his own family values.

As a part of the innovative experiment, Scindia credited ₹500 rather than ₹250 in every one of the 886 new-born girls' SSY accounts—222 in Guna district, 274 in Ashoknagar district and 390 in Shivpuri district.

Scindia also added that the parents of such girls will be motivated to open the SSY accounts. There is no need to fret about depositing the amount as he himself would do it, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader added.

Scindia added that he has so far deposited more than ₹4.30 lakh from his personal account. "Whatever amount is needed under this scheme, I will personally provide from my side," he added.

At the event, Scindia also interacted with some of these newly born girls and their guardians and handed over to them certificates of the scheme. He also added that India is a special country in which 15 per cent women are pilots in civil aviation while the world average is 5 per cent.

He further added that 15,000 'Drone Didis' are operational in the nation, and so far, 10 crore women have been benefited through the Ujjwala scheme.

Namo Drone Didi is a scheme of the central government with an objective to empower Self-Help Groups (SHGs) headed by women by providing them with drone technology to offer agricultural services.

Till now, 3.60 crore SSY accounts have been opened in India, out of which a sum of ₹2 lakh crore has been deposited, Scindia mentioned, adding that 20,000 accounts have been opened in Guna district alone.
