The hunt to track down terrorists hiding in the forest belt of Udhampur district has been extended by security forces on Monday, officials said. The cordon and search operation, which entered its second day on Monday, was launched in the Majalta forests after two terrorists reportedly took food from a house before fleeing into the nearby forest area on Sunday.
The area under the cordon and search operation was widened to nearly 10 kms in the forest area. The operation is being backed by sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance to pin down the two terrorists hiding in the area, officials added.
This expansion of the operation was needed because the terrorists were spotted in the forest area for the third time in the past few days. Their movement was also noticed on Sunday night, they added.
A joint search operation by police and paramilitary forces was underway in Chore Motu and its adjoining forest villages in the Majalta area. The area is located about five kilometres west of the site of an earlier encounter in which a policeman lost his life, officials said.
The operations were initiated after receiving credible leads about the presence of terrorists in the area. Officials said the terrorists had visited the house of Mangtu Ram in Chore Motu village at around 6.30 pm and had food before leaving.
Meanwhile, on December 15, one SOG Jawan of Jammu and Kashmir was killed in an encounter with terrorists at Soan village in the Majalta area. The encounter lasted for several hours before the terrorists managed to give the slip to the security forces and fled to nearby forests.
