Jharkhand is grappling with a severe cold wave, which has claimed five lives in the past 24 hours, officials reported on Saturday. The extreme chill, coupled with dense fog, continues to disrupt normal life across the state.
Of the fatalities, three occurred in Chatra district, while one each was reported from Giridih and Lohardaga. Temperatures have plunged below 10 degrees Celsius in five districts, aggravating the harsh conditions.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Ranchi has warned that relief is unlikely over the next two days. An Orange Alert has been issued for seven districts, while 13 districts remain under a Yellow Alert, signalling continued cold wave conditions across Jharkhand. Dense fog is expected to persist in all 20 districts under alert, limiting visibility and causing transportation challenges.

Officials have urged residents, especially the elderly and children, to take precautions. On Saturday, Kanke in Ranchi district recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 6.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Lohardaga at 7.7 degrees Celsius. Other districts recording temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius include Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, and Latehar.
