Navjot Singh Sidhu will return to active politics if the Congress announces him as its chief ministerial face in Punjab, his wife and party leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu has said.
She also said they do not have money to offer any party but they can still turn Punjab into a “golden state.”
“We always speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat...but do not have Rs 500 crore which we can give to sit in chief minister's chair,” Navjot Kaur told mediaperons on Saturday after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on issues, including the reported decline in law and order in the state.
When asked if any party had sought money from them, she said no one asked directly, but “one who gives a suitcase of Rs 500 crore he becomes the CM".
"If any party gives him that power so that he can improve Punjab. We do not have money to give it to any party but we will give results and we will turn Punjab into a golden state," she added.
She also hinted at “infighting” within the Punjab Congress unit, saying that five leaders are already eyeing the chief minister’s post and they will not allow Sidhu to move forward.
Replying to another question, she said her husband is “strongly attached” to the Congress and to party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
"But with so much infighting, I do not feel that they will let Navjot Sidhu be promoted as there are already five CMs faces and they are hell bent on defeating the Congress. If they (high command) understand this then it is a different matter,” she said.
When asked if Sidhu would return to the BJP if the party offered him this responsibility, she said she could not speak on his behalf. On whether he will return to active politics if the Congress names him its CM face, she said he will return. “Otherwise, he is earning well and is happy,” she added.
Former Punjab Congress chief Sidhu has stayed away from the party’s events and activities for many months. He also did not campaign during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Sidhu made a comeback to cricket commentary during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
In April, Sidhu also launched a new YouTube channel, ‘Navjot Sidhu Official,’ where he shares life experiences, talks about cricket, commentary, motivation and lifestyle.
When asked at that time if he would return to active politics, Sidhu had said time will tell, adding that he did politics for people’s welfare and never treated it as a business.
Assembly elections in Punjab are due in 2027.
