An SIT has been set up after the police received several complaints of sandalwood theft from three locations in Hamirpur district over the past two weeks, an official said on Friday.
Three cases were reported from the Nagar Nigam area, while rural parts of the district also saw similar incidents.
Sandalwood, also called red sanders, is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and its international trade is banned under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) rules.
Hamirpur SP Bhagat Singh Thakur said the SIT would be headed by the DSP and would investigate the thefts. In each case, thieves cut away the valuable part of the tree and left the rest behind.
