The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced a large-scale protest against the Punjab Government, set to begin on March 5 in Chandigarh. Thousands of farmers from across Punjab are expected to march towards the city on March 4 to press for their demands.
On Saturday, SKM leaders held a crucial meeting at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh, where they finalized their strategy for the protest. The agitation is expected to last for a week, with discussions currently underway with Chandigarh police to determine the designated protest site.
Key demands of the SKM
The SKM leaders have listed several major concerns, urging the Punjab Government to take immediate action:
- Withdrawal of amendments in water conservation regulations – Farmers oppose recent changes, arguing they negatively impact agriculture.
- Protection of the Punjabi language – SKM demands that the Punjab Government reject Central Government policies affecting the status of Punjabi and pass a resolution in the Vidhan Sabha to safeguard it.
- Independent state education policy – Farmers are pushing for a Punjab-specific education policy, including syllabus reforms that cater to local students’ needs.
Unfulfilled promises & financial concerns
SKM leaders accused the Punjab Government of failing to fulfill its promises to farmers. While the state had earlier sought inputs from farmers on agricultural policy, leaders claim the final implementation ignored their recommendations.
Another major issue raised was the financial losses suffered by paddy farmers due to price cuts, despite Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s previous assurances regarding the PR-126 paddy variety. Farmers argue that the government's decisions have exacerbated their economic struggles instead of providing relief.

Suspension of BKU (Toteval) President & Internal Inquiry
The meeting also addressed allegations against BKU (Toteval) President Sukh Gill, who is facing accusations from a deported NRI youth. In response, the SKM has suspended Sukh Gill and formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter.
The investigation panel consists of:
- Harjinder Singh Tanda
- Ruldu Singh Mansa
- Prem Singh Bhangu
The committee has been given one month to submit its findings.
Next steps & expected turnout
With farmers gearing up for the march on March 4, SKM has urged all farmer unions and supporters to join the protest in Chandigarh. As discussions with the Chandigarh police continue regarding the protest location, authorities are preparing for large-scale demonstrations in the city.
The coming days are expected to be crucial as SKM leaders and the Punjab Government navigate negotiations and potential confrontations over these pressing issues.
