Cold wave conditions have intensified across the Kashmir Valley this week, with Srinagar recording minus 4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, officials said.
According to the MeT office, Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a sharp dip in the minimum temperature as the mercury settled at minus 4.0 degrees on Wednesday night.
The bone-chilling cold wave is expected to intensify further in the coming days, with the MeT department predicting dry weather to persist until December 7.
The ongoing weather conditions are likely to change after December 7, as light snowfall in the higher reaches and rainfall in the plains expected to begin from the coming Sunday.
Nearly all weather stations in the Kashmir Valley have recorded freezing conditions, in addition to intense cold breeze early in the morning. Katra district in Jammu remained the warmest place with 8.4 degrees, while Pulwama remained the coldest with minus 5.6 degrees.
While daytime temperatures have remained relatively moderate across Jammu and Kashmir, night temperatures have plummeted below freezing point most stations in the Valley.
In central Kashmir, temperatures dropped to below freezing point in Budgam and Ganderbal, along with South Kashmir’s Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Anantnag, which also saw a sharp decline over the past 48 hours.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, also recorded minus 3.6 degrees, while several other stations across north Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, also recorded a sharp decline in night temperature.
