Minimum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir have remained below freezing at most weather stations due to clear night skies and dry weather conditions, officials said on Friday.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded a minimum of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.”
The minimum temperature in Srinagar has fluctuated over the past couple of weeks following the end of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period in Kashmir.
Sonmarg in Ganderbal district emerged as the coldest place in the region with a minimum temperature of minus 8.3 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Pahalgam at minus 7.5 degrees Celsius and the world-famous ski resort of Gulmarg at minus 7.8 degrees Celsius.
A 20-day Chillai-Khurd (“small cold”) began on Saturday after the conclusion of Chillai-Kalan. Chillai-Khurd will be followed by the 10-day Chillai-Bachha (“baby cold”).
On Sunday, the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley received fresh snowfall, while rain lashed the plains. Meanwhile, the MeT Department has forecast cloudy but dry weather conditions with no significant rain or snowfall until February 16.
The weather is expected to remain mostly dry over the next two weeks. However, the possibility of rain and snowfall cannot be entirely ruled out, the MeT said.
Cloud cover is likely to increase on February 14, with a chance of light snowfall at isolated higher reaches. February 15 and 16 are expected to remain partly to generally cloudy without any notable chances of rain or snowfall.
