The Srinagar-Leh National Highway remained shut on Saturday as authorities resumed snow clearance operations following a massive avalanche that killed seven people and left five others wounded on Friday.
Multiple vehicles with passengers were buried under the snow debris, prompting authorities to launch a quick search and rescue operation to trace out the people buried under the snow.
“Seven people were killed, and several vehicles were buried in an avalanche on Friday at the Zojila Pass,” officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to officials, a ten-year-old child was among those killed in yesterday’s weather-induced disaster at the Zojila Pass.
“The highway is closed for traffic, and snow clearance operations are underway,” officials said.
Traffic will be allowed once the road is cleared of avalanche debris, they added.
J&K Police, Army, CRPF, Ladakh Police, SDRF, and civil administration are looking for the missing, they said.
In a post on X, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena wrote, “Heard the unfortunate news of an avalanche at Zoji La. I have directed the DC and SSP of Kargil to visit the spot immediately and mobilise a relief and rescue operation.”
“All government agencies, including disaster relief forces and BRO, have been put on high alert. I am personally monitoring the situation,” the L-G said.
Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives.
