Jammu and Kashmir recorded the season’s coldest night so far on Friday, with the mercury dropping to 0.2 degrees Celsius, while famous tourist resorts across Kashmir witnessed sub-zero temperatures.
Meteorological (MeT) Department officials said, “Gulmarg recorded minus 2.6 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam minus 3 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperatures today.”
Temperatures across the Valley have fallen by several degrees after the recent snowfall in the hill stations.
“The weather is expected to remain dry for the next ten days, with night temperatures falling below the freezing point in Kashmir,” the MeT officials said.
Amid the sudden drop in night-time temperatures, local population have started embracing winter by putting on warm clothes.
The coldest part of the winter, the 40-day-long ‘Chillai Kalan’, begins every year on December 21 and ends on January 30.
During this period, most water bodies in the Valley freeze partially, and slippery road conditions often force commuters and motorists to venture out only after the morning hours are over and temperatures improve slightly during the day.
Meanwhile, Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 11.6 degrees Celsius on Friday. The Mata Vaishno Devi base camp town, Katra, recorded 12.1 degrees; Batote, 6.1; Banihal, 8.8 and Bhaderwah, 4.5 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperatures.
