Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season, with temperatures plummeting to minus 2.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the Met Department said.

According to the MeT Department, Pahalgam was the coldest in the Kashmir Valley, where the temperature slipped to minus 3.8 degrees Celsius.

Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, said there is no forecast of any wet spell for the next week, but the night temperature will remain almost unchanged till November 17.

He added that there is a possibility of a slight improvement in the night temperature after November 17 for two to three days. After early snowfall in major hill stations across Jammu and Kashmir, temperatures, especially in the Valley, have dropped sharply in recent weeks.

The intensifying cold mornings are posing challenges to the local population, with people wearing winter clothing to protect themselves from the cold and other seasonal illnesses. Many tourists, however, found the cold morning breeze refreshing.

Meanwhile, the harsh “40-Chillai Kalan”, the coldest winter period, begins on December 21 and ends on January 31.

During this time, Kashmir experiences extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and temperatures that often drop below freezing, causing water bodies to freeze and impacting daily life. The term comes from Persian and literally means "major cold", and the period is crucial for replenishing the region's water resources.
