Kashmir Police chief V K Birdi on Saturday said strict, multi-tier security arrangements have been enforced to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations across the Valley. He also urged people to actively participate in the event.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Birdi was addressing reporters after a full-dress rehearsal at the Bakshi Stadium here, which will host the main Republic Day function in Kashmir. He also reviewed the security arrangements at the venue.

“We have multi-tiered security arrangements in place, with involvement from J-K Police, and central paramilitary forces,” Birdi said. He stated that apart from the main function, separate Republic Day events will be held at district headquarters across the Valley.

The IGP said similar strict security measures have been made across Kashmir to ensure peaceful and smooth celebrations. He once again urged people to come forward and take part in the national event.

"Common people are warmly welcome to join the celebrations along with their families. School children should also join. It is an open event, and everyone is free to come," he said.

A full-dress rehearsal was held at the Bakshi Stadium under the supervision of Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg. He hoisted the national flag and took the salute during the march past, they added. Garg also inspected the parade during the rehearsal, they added.

Contingents of police and various security forces took part in the march past. Several senior civil administration and police officers were present at the venue during the rehearsal.

As per officials, security forces restricted vehicular movement on roads leading to the stadium as a precautionary measure. No traffic was allowed on these routes until the rehearsal was completed.

Earlier in the day, the Divisional Commissioner and the IGP paid tributes to martyrs at the Balidan Stambh at Pratap Park near Lal Chowk in the city centre, officials said.
