Modern universities should give priority to faculty development, innovation and strong academic collaboration to build a globally competitive education system. Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan said this while addressing the ninth convocation of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh here on Saturday.

He also said that most of the medal winners were women. He said this reflects the growing empowerment of women and their increasing role in the nation’s progress.

Radhakrishnan urged students to dedicate themselves to nation-building and uphold the spirit of “Nation First”. He said the youth will play an important role in transforming India into a developed nation and emphasised the need for inclusive growth so that no state or section of society is left behind.

He said Himachal Pradesh is known as “Dev Bhoomi” (Land of the Gods) as well as “Veer Bhoomi” (Land of the brave). He further said that the state has made significant contributions to the country’s armed forces and is widely respected for its rich culture, traditions and warm hospitality.

When he arrived at Kangra Airport, the vice president was received by Governor Kavinder Gupta, Agriculture Minister Chandra Kumar and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur. A ceremonial guard of honour was also given to him.

Hailing the university’s “Community Lab” initiative and its efforts to create a drug-free campus, Radhakrishnan urged young people to stay alert against drug abuse and use their energy for constructive nation-building.

This was the vice president’s first visit to Himachal Pradesh after taking office. Earlier in the day, he laid a floral wreath at the State War Memorial to pay tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country.
