The Army on Thursday seized a suspected consignment allegedly dropped by a drone near the International Border in Poonch district, officials said.
The dropping took place in the area between Rangar Nallah and the Poonch River in the Chakkan da Bagh belt of Khari village early Thursday morning, they said. The Army found a bag carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition and a yellow tiffin box suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED), officials said.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) examined the bag, while security forces, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area.
On Wednesday, security forces seized a drone in Gohled village of Poonch district and found PIA-marked, aeroplane-shaped balloons.
In Kathua, a drone dropping incident led to the apprehension of eight people, resulting in the recovery of 447 grams of contraband substances.
In August last year, around half a dozen drones were suspected to have crossed into the LoC and the IB near forward areas of the Mendhar sector in Poonch.
According to official sources, 2025 marked one of the highest numbers of drone sightings across the Line of Control and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir.
These drones were carrying drugs, arms and ammunition, allegedly supplied to groups like the TRF (The Resistance Front) in the Samba sector.
Meanwhile, in a bid to strengthen the law and order situation along the forward areas in Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has released a draft Civil Drone (Promotion and Regulation) Bill, 2025, which includes penalties of up to Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh and potential imprisonment for violations.
