Three members of a family from Madurai were killed and two others injured in a tragic road accident in Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district on Sunday after the car they were travelling in crashed into the parapet of a bridge on the Chennai-Trichy National Highway.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 7.45 am near Pedagam village when the family was travelling from Pazhanganatham in Madurai district to Chennai to attend an engagement ceremony. The family was travelling in their own car.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle while crossing a bridge. During the manoeuvre, he reportedly lost control of the car, which veered off course and rammed into the bridge's parapet with great force.

The impact of the collision was severe, killing three occupants on the spot. The deceased were identified as Selvam (63), his wife Selvi (55), and the car driver, Chellapandian (40).
Two other passengers, identified as Kavitha (48) and Selvam's 30-year-old son Praveen, sustained injuries in the accident. Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Villupuram Government Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Police reached the accident site soon after receiving information, recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. Traffic on the highway was briefly affected before the damaged vehicle was removed and normal movement restored.
A case has been registered, and police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Initial findings suggest that the crash occurred while the driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle, though further inquiries are underway.
