A voter turnout of around 60.95 per cent was recorded till 6 pm during the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election in Punjab on Tuesday.
Polling started at 7 am and continued till 6 pm under tight security arrangements, officials said. Voters started lining up outside polling stations early in the morning to exercise their votes. However, as the day progressed and temperatures increased, the turnout came down slightly.
According to the data of the Election Commission, 11 per cent polling was recorded till 9 am, which rose to 23.35 per cent by 11 am, 36.06 per cent by 1 pm, and 47.48 per cent by 3 pm. By 5 pm, voter turnout reached 59.21 per cent, showing active participation across the constituency.
Security was strengthened throughout the day. Punjab Police managed the outer perimeters of most polling stations, while Central Armed Police Forces were deployed inside to oversee the inner cordon.
The Tarn Taran constituency had 1,92,838 eligible voters, 1,00,933 male, 91,897 female, and eight third-gender. A total of 222 polling stations were set up at 114 locations, including 60 in urban and 162 in rural areas. Of these, four were designated as ‘model’ booths and three as ‘pink’ booths, officials said.
The counting of votes will be held on November 14, and the results are expected the same day.
