A first-year law student, who allegedly shot dead his female classmate inside a college in Tarn Taran and later shot himself, has succumbed to his injuries, the police said on Thursday.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagdeep Singh, the accused, Prince Raj (20), died late on Wednesday night at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar.

On February 9, Prince had allegedly shot 19-year-old Sandeep Kaur inside the classroom and then turned the gun on himself. Sandeep died on the spot, while Prince was rushed to hospital.

Both Prince and Sandeep were first-year law students and classmates at Mai Bhago Law College in Tarn Taran’s Usma village.

The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed inside the classroom. The footage showed Prince, Sandeep and another female student sitting together, with several other students nearby.

The video showed Prince getting up, taking a pistol out of his bag and shooting Sandeep. He then shot himself in the head and collapsed on the floor. The shocked student sitting beside Sandeep stood up and checked on her, but she showed no movement.

A few students immediately went into the classroom after hearing the gunshot, but ran out after seeing Sandeep lying dead.

The victim’s family alleged that Prince had been harassing her for some time and had even followed her home on one occasion. A family member said Sandeep was engaged and getting married soon.

The police earlier said the weapon used by Prince appeared to be illegal. Prince was a resident of Mallian village, while Sandeep hailed from Naushehra Pannuan village.

A case has been registered under Section 103 (punishment for murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
