The ruling Congress in Telangana has postponed its planned public meeting in Kamareddy town, which was scheduled for September 15, due to a forecast of heavy rain.

In a release, the Congress said that a new date for the rally would be announced soon. State Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud recently stated that the meeting was intended to highlight the party's efforts to implement its election promise of providing 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes and to "expose" the alleged anti-BC stance of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Goud claimed that the Congress government had conducted a caste survey as a prerequisite for the reservation—to collect the empirical data needed for court submissions if necessary. He alleged that BJP leaders, including Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, were obstructing the implementation of two Bills passed by the Telangana legislature that would provide 42 pc reservation to Backward Classes in education, employment, and local bodies.

The Telangana Legislative Assembly passed the two Bills in March of this year. They were then forwarded to the Governor and are currently awaiting Presidential assent.

On August 6, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy led a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to demand Presidential assent for the Bills. He alleged that the BJP-led central government was stalling the legislation because it was "anti-OBC." It was in Kamareddy town that the Congress had announced a 'BC Declaration' before the 2023 assembly elections, promising to increase reservation for Backward Classes from 23 pc to 42 pc.
