With the creation of a new police Commissionerate in Hyderabad, the decks have been cleared for developing the proposed ‘Future City’, a brainchild of the Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

Proposed to be developed on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the ‘Future City’ will be a newly carved-out entity that is expected to focus on upcoming urban expansions and smart city initiatives in the Greater Hyderabad region. This will be the fourth city in the Hyderabad region after the main Hyderabad city, Secunderabad, and Cyberabad.

This new unit is formed by reorganising and bifurcating the existing Rachakonda Commissionerate, aiming to provide more localised and responsive policing in densely populated areas like Malkajgiri, Uppal, and surrounding suburbs.

Officials believe this division will reduce administrative overload and improve response times to incidents ranging from traffic management to cybercrimes.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has also been reorganised to include several new areas. The Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, which had jurisdiction over a vast area surrounding Hyderabad, has been reorganised and will now be known as Malkajgiri Commissionerate.

Meanwhile, the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, known for its jurisdiction over Hyderabad’s high-tech zones including HITEC City and Gachibowli, is also being reorganised to keep a watch on the city’s westward expansion.

M Ramesh, an IPS officer of 2005 batch, who held multiple roles including Inspector General of Police for Provisioning and Logistics, has been transferred to take charge as the new Commissioner of Police for the reorganised Cyberabad.

The Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri area, which was under the erstwhile Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, has been separated as a new police district, and a Superintendent of Police (SP) will head it.

“State government has reorganised the police administration and created four new police Commissionerates in accordance with the reorganisation of the GHMC and the Future City,” a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said. The previously existing three Commissionerates have been reorganised, and Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Malkajgiri, and Future City Commissionerates have been established.

Key areas such as the Assembly, Secretariat, Begumpet, Shamshabad Airport, and Budvel High Court have been brought under the Hyderabad Commissionerate. The rapidly developing IT areas of Gachibowli, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Madhapur, and Raidurg, along with industrial areas like Patancheru, Genome Valley, RC Puram, and Ameenpur, will fall under the Cyberabad Commissionerate. The Rachakonda Commissionerate has been reorganised, and a new commissionerate named Malkajgiri has been established. Areas such as Keesara, Shamirpet, Quthbullapur, and Kompally will come under this commissionerate. A new commissionerate for the rapidly developing Future City will have Chevella, Moinabad, Shankarpally, Maheshwaram, Ibrahimpatnam, and other areas under it.

Moving quickly after the announcement, the state government appointed commissioners. Senior IPS officer G Sudheer Babu, who was heading the Rachakonda police, has been posted as Future City Police Commissioner; Avinash Mohanty, Cyberabad Police Commissioner, has been posted as the newly created Malkajgiri Commissioner; Dr M Ramesh, IGP, has been posted as Cyberabad Commissioner; and Akshansh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner (Yadadri Bhuvangiri), has been posted as SP of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.

The government unveiled the Telangana Rising 2047 Vision Document at the Telangana Rising Global Summit on December 9. The document laid a roadmap to achieve a $3-trillion economy by 2047, the CMO said. As part of providing better services to the public, maintaining law and order, and controlling crime, the police administration has been divided into four Commissionerates, the CMO said.
