A 19-year-old student, who hailed from Telangana, reportedly committed suicide at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Kurukshetra district of Haryana, according to police.

The victim has been identified as Angod Shiva. He was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Monday. Shiva hailed from Maheshwari village in Telangana’s Rangareddy district. He was pursuing Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the NIT and was staying in a hostel on the campus.

Police said no suicide note was recovered from the room. Shiva was alone at the time of the incident. His two roommates, hailing from Haryana, had gone out for lunch. After attending his class at around 10 am, Shiva came back to his room while his roommates left for the mess.

When Shiva did not come for lunch, his roommate went back to the room to call him but he found the door locked from the inside. When there was no response despite repeated knocking, Shiva’s roommate went to the rear side of the building and looked through a window. He reportedly saw Shiva hanging from the ceiling fan.

As soon as the NIT administration came to know about the incident, it informed the police.

Vinod Kumar, in-charge of a police post under Thanesar police station, said the body had been kept in the mortuary of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP) for post-mortem.

Police have started proceedings under the relevant sections of the law. The probe is ongoing.
