West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday issued a strong and unprecedented warning to Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir in the Legislative Assembly, cautioning him of strict legal action over alleged provocative remarks and attempts to incite lawlessness. In a firm statement, the Chief Minister declared, “You can take it that this was his last speech,” signaling a zero-tolerance stance against such conduct.

With the permission of Assembly Speaker Rathin Basu and following consultations with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shankar Ghosh, the Chief Minister presented before the House a verbatim account of two controversial speeches delivered by Kabir. Emphasising the government’s position, Adhikari stated that the era of ‘goonda raj’ would not be allowed to continue in the state.

Detailing the first incident, the Chief Minister referred to a speech made on June 26 at Kashipur in Rejinagar. According to the account presented in the Assembly, Kabir allegedly mocked BJP leadership and issued inflammatory remarks, warning of mobilising members of the Muslim community against political opponents. He was also accused of threatening to fill jails with supporters and disregard the authority of law enforcement, including senior officials.

The second incident cited by the Chief Minister pertained to an event earlier in the month at Duara Ghat in Shaktipur. Kabir was accused of using aggressive and abusive language against a local police officer in connection with the arrest of his nephew. He allegedly threatened to mobilise a large crowd to surround the police station and forcibly confront the officer.

After presenting these instances, the Chief Minister asserted that “enough is enough” and that the time had come to take strict action. Drawing a contrast with the previous administration, he remarked that such behaviour would no longer be tolerated under the current government.

Adhikari informed the Assembly that two FIRs had already been registered against Kabir under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Offering a political interpretation of the MLA’s actions, the Chief Minister alleged that Kabir’s conduct was driven by two factors— a failed attempt to exert control over local panchayats in Bharatpur, Rejinagar, and Naoda, and preparations for an upcoming by-election in Rejinagar, where Kabir was allegedly seeking to consolidate support.

The Chief Minister also warned against the consequences of defying the law, citing examples of influential figures who had faced legal action in the past. Without naming individuals, he referred to cases of political strongmen whose influence had waned following strict enforcement measures.

Concluding his address, Adhikari reiterated that the rule of law would prevail above all. “No individual’s arbitrary will can override the Constitution. The final authority rests with the law of India,” he said, adding that he would soon visit Murshidabad to ensure that law and order is firmly established in the region.
