Three criminals were apprehended after an exchange of fire with police in Chandigarh, an official said on Tuesday.
According to police official, the Operation Cell of Chandigarh Police received secret information about the movement of three suspects near the city bus stand. When the police team tried to stop and arrest them, the criminals opened fire. A bullet hit a policeman’s bulletproof jacket, but he luckily escaped unhurt, the official said.
Chandigarh DSP Dhiraj Kumar said "Around 10:15 pm, Inspector Satwinder of the Chandigarh Police Operations Cell, along with his team, noticed suspicious movement among a group of individuals at the back side of the Sector 43 Bus Stand. Acting on this basis, a trap was laid."
"The police team saw three individuals exhibiting suspicious movements; and when they tried to intercept the suspected individuals, they opened fire from their side," he further said.
The accused fired around three rounds during the incident, he added. The three suspects, believed to be linked to the Bambiha gang, were later caught by the police.
Three weapons were seized from their possession, officials said. Further probe is underway.
