After evidence gathering late on Sunday, the Puthukkad Police have arrested Bavin (25) and Aneesha (23) for the killing of their newborn children. They have been booked under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Other charges are 91 (prevent a child from being born alive or to cause its death after birth), 93 (exposure and abandoning a child), 94 (secret disposal of a dead body), 238(b) (causing disappearance of evidence), 3(5 (constructive liability) of BNS and 75 (punishment for cruelty to children) of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Police exhumated the burial grounds on Monday to collect further evidence for forensic analysis. Also, a postmortem and DNA analysis are planned for the day. On Sunday, Dr AK Unmesh, the head of the forensic medicine department at Thrissur Medical College, examined and confirmed that bones found inside the bag produced by Bavin are human remains.

At about 12.20 am on Sunday, Bavin entered the Puthukkad police station with a bag of bones, stating they were the bodies of his children with his girlfriend, Aneesha. Upon an immediate investigation into the incident, Bavin and Aneesha were apprehended and questioned, following which the latter admitted to the crime.

The first child was born still on November 6, 2021, as per Aneesha's account, and she buried the corpse in her house yard. She referred to YouTube videos on giving birth prior to her giving birth. Eight months after that, she dug up the bony remains and surrendered them to Bavin.

The second baby was killed on 29th August 2024. Aneesha, as reported by police, wrapped the baby in cloth and brought the body to Bavin's residence the next day. Bavin buried the body in a plantation in his backyard. He dug up the grave later and stored the remains. Bavin later confessed to the crime after becoming estranged from Aneesha.

Aneesha's neighbour, Girija, believed she was pregnant. Girija had observed Aneesha digging a shallow pit and covering something with it after bringing it home in a bucket. When accused, Aneesha refuted the claims, stating she was only experiencing hormonal imbalances and wore loose-fitting clothes to conceal her pregnancies. She even registered a defamation case against Girija at the Vellikulangara police station, which was subsequently amicably settled.

Bavin and Aneesha first met on Facebook in 2020 and remained close to each other for more than five years but never got married.
