Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar threw some fuel on the fire of the state's ongoing power struggle on Saturday, telling reporters that "time will answer" regarding when he might be elevated to the top post. Amidst renewed speculation over a leadership change, Shivakumar emphasised that while supporters and legislators might have desires, everyone must abide by the ultimate decision of the Congress high command.
These are comments which come on the heels of sharp statements issued by MLC Siddaramaiah, the son of the existing chief minister, remarking that he would make sure his father served out a full term, to which Shivakumar retorted sarcastically, perhaps he has now become the high command of the party.
The friction has intensified as the government passes the halfway mark of its term, fueling rumors of a power-sharing pact between Shivakumar and CM Siddaramaiah that was reportedly struck back in 2023. While Siddaramaiah is busy preparing to present a record 17th state budget in March, supporters of other leaders, including Home Minister G. Parameshwara, are also making noise about their own leadership aspirations. When asked about these demands, Shivakumar calmly acknowledged that supporters are allowed to voice their desires.
Adding another layer of complexity, Shivakumar also addressed the brewing controversy over a proposed Bengaluru metro rail fare hike. As the minister in charge of Bengaluru development, he promised to intervene, stating that the state government was not consulted on the decision, which was driven by a committee chaired by a central government secretary. He assured that he would look into the financial structure of the BMRCL to ensure commuters are not unnecessarily burdened.
